Meeting with Department of Commerce Regarding Soybean Meal Crisis on 16th June, 2026:
Following the representations submitted by CLFMA OF INDIA and various poultry associations to Shri Piyush Goyal Ji, Hon’ble Union Minister of Commerce & Industry, Government of India, regarding the ongoing soybean meal supply and price crisis, a meeting was held on 16th June 2026 at Vanijya Bhawan, New Delhi, with senior officials of the Department of Commerce. Representatives from CLFMA OF INDIA, the Poultry Federation of India (PFI), and the Poultry Farmers and Breeders Association (PF&BA), Maharashtra, met Mrs. Priya P. Nair, Economic Adviser (Joint Secretary Level), Department of Commerce, Ministry of Commerce & Industry, to discuss the serious implications of escalating soybean meal prices on the poultry and livestock sectors. The delegation highlighted that soybean meal is a critical protein source for poultry, dairy, aquaculture, shrimp, and other livestock feed, and emphasized that while the estimated national requirement for FY 2026–27 is 10.62 million metric tonnes (MMT), domestic availability is expected to be only 8.32 MMT, resulting in a projected deficit of approximately 1.74 MMT and significant increases in feed production costs.
To address the widening supply gap, the delegation requested the Department of Commerce to consider a time-bound import relief measure permitting the import of 1.5 MMT of soybean meal to bridge the immediate deficit, stabilize domestic prices, reduce feed costs, and support the sustainability and competitiveness of the poultry, dairy, aquaculture, and livestock sectors while protecting farmers, producers, and consumers from rising feed cost inflation. Mrs. Priya P. Nair patiently heard the concerns presented by the delegation, provided valuable guidance on the matter, and assured that the issues would receive due consideration. The delegation appreciated the constructive discussion and the positive engagement extended by the Department of Commerce.

Representatives from INFAH emphasized the need for formal communication and advisory guidelines to facilitate industry preparedness, while PFI highlighted that access to imported HPAI vaccines would provide much-needed relief to the poultry sector and could pave the way for future domestic manufacturing, similar to India's existing production of Low Pathogenic Avian Influenza (LPAI) vaccines. Overall, the meeting was viewed as a positive step towards enhancing India's preparedness and response framework for avian influenza control.
